Government of Canada to ensure Economic Recovery with Throne Speech and Budget 2010
March 04, 2010

Parliament returned this week with a Speech from the Throne and the tabling of the 2010 Budget, which will implement year 2 of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

So far the Plan has helped create over 135,000 jobs across Canada since July of 2009 and saved over 200,000 more through an expanded work-sharing program. It has created jobs in Sarnia-Lambton thanks to millions of dollars in infrastructure investments.

The main focus of the throne speech was on ensuring economic recovery while also planning on a return to budgetary balance once the economy recovers, while also continuing on this government’s track record of getting tough on crime. It also will focus on innovation and creating jobs of the future.

Budget 2010 will extend the work-sharing program, support innovation, training, education and research opportunities in Canada, and will keep taxes low to encourage economic growth and competitiveness.  The Budget will continue the stimulus that began in 2009 with $19 billion being directed towards stimulus in the upcoming fiscal year.  This will ensure a stable foundation for the economic recovery that is already underway, yet remains fragile at the moment.

The Government also has a three-point plan to reduce the deficit by winding down stimulus spending, restraining government spending and launching a comprehensive review of government spending on administration and overhead. More information is available at http://www.fin.gc.ca/
